Evaluations & Reevaluations

Includes California-specific guidance. Timelines, eligibility and programs vary by state. Confirm details with your school or state’s parent center. Find your state’s parent center.

An evaluation (called an 'assessment' in California) determines whether your child is eligible and what they need.

How to request

Put your request in writing, date it, and keep a copy. Use the Letter Builder's 'Request an Evaluation' template.

What happens next

  • You receive an assessment plan within 15 days. You have at least 15 days to review and sign it.
  • Once signed, the school has 60 days to assess and hold the IEP meeting.

If you disagree

You may request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) at public expense.
